More than 2,500 (grades K-6) students from throughout Yolo County attended Farm Connection Day at the Yolo County Fairgrounds on Friday. The annual event gives kids the opportunity to learn and interact with farm animals, view creative arts and science projects, and see agriculture-related organizations and demonstrations.
Yolo Farm to Fork was there so that kids could make their own newspaper pots, fill with soil, and choose the seeds (they chose between arugula and Swiss chard) to take home and grow their own plants. Once the seeds sprout, the pot can be planted in the ground, newspaper and all (since it’s biodegradable). It’s a fun activity and adults enjoyed making their own pots, too. Our activity was so popular that we ran out of newspaper until a teacher found us more!
Farm Connection Day is a partnership between the Yolo County 4H and the Yolo County Farm Bureau. Farm Connection the unofficial start of the 4H Spring Show that starts Saturday and continues through the weekend. We appreciate having been invited to participate and enjoyed being part of this event – everyone had a great time. http://bit.ly/1ca7co2
